Introduction:

We, Department of Computer Science consider Extension activity as  the educational process to provide knowledge to young people –  Learning By Doing .
This involves not only educating students to find problems and methods to solve them but we want to inspire them towards positive attitude to learn the booming trend of Information Technology .
With the booming trend of Information Technology field,yet  there are many less privileged Government school children who are still not exposed to this latest technology. So with a view to help them we the Department of Computer Science took the  extension activity to enrich the school  students  by teaching them Fundamentals of Computers.
This Teaching – Learning Process includes Simple Mathematical exercises to inculcate arithmetic skills  and logical reasoning (by providing them with puzzles and Brain teasers).

Our students teach Grammar in an interesting manner by showing the school children with pictures,Flash cards. The also teach simple exercises by which the vocabulary may get strengthened.
School children were taught the concepts using 10 Laptop Computers. There were given hands on training. They enjoyed working with Laptops which kindled their interest in the field of Computer Science.
Our students help the school children in revising their curriculum during Term- End Examinations.
Our students conduct brain storming sessions to recollect ideas that the school children already known. 
 
Objective:

To impart basic knowledge in Computers and to trigger the desire for computer knowledge.
 
Methodology Followed:
 
Cyber school on wheels which is fitted with LCD TV, Laptop Computer will be used to teach the  school children .
Total hours planned   -  40 Hrs.
Theory   teaching       -  20 Hrs.
Hands on training      -  20 Hrs
Duration: 2hrs/week  (Every Friday)( 2.00 – 4.00 p.m.)

Need Based Teaching :

The III B.sc students (A.Bhuvaneswari , A.Sorna Priya) taught the 11th std. students of Government Higher secondary school, to complete the Mid-Term portions as they don’t have the Computer teacher from 17.10.2008 to 25.10.2008 .

2009-10
 
At the end of the year a competition was conducted  for the VIII Std Students and 70 students participated enthusiastically. Prizes were awarded to the first four students. All the participants were given a  memento.

Objective:

To transform the basic skills and knowledge of our students as a vehicle for spreading scientific and technical innovations.
Helping people to help themselves by changing their behavior
To make our students sensitive to the real problems of rural, technologically backward and less privileged people living in the village Athalai.
To  help them to solve by giving awareness programs and exposing them to the latest technology.
 
Activities Carried Out :
 
       To create awareness amongst the rural people Department of Computer Science has organized discrete programs exclusively for children, youth and women. Notice was printed and distributed earlier. A copy of the notice is given below.

Children :
 
Std I – III

Recitation poems and figure identifying games.
 
Std IV – VI

Recitation of tables, Fruit and vegetable name ( Missing letter games).
 
Std VII - VIII

  Our students taught Word games, mathematical tables and  Grammar in an interesting manner by showing them   with pictures , Flash cards and simple presentations using laptops. The also taught  simple exercises by which the vocabulary may get strengthened. To promote the spirit of patriotism, National Leaders and their achievements, thoughts were shared among the students.

Youth:

Introduction to Internet and hands – On training for MS-WORD and PAINT.
Knowledge in Computers was given to trigger the desire for Learning.  Simple competitions using computers (word puzzle, number game etc..) was  conducted to test their skill and creativity. To improve the sense of road safety, a presentation on traffic rules was displayed.

Women :

Health and hygiene is a global problem which is difficult to tackle in a thickly populated country like India. Presentations based on Healthy food habits, First Aid Techniques were shown.
